Inspired by the growth of tourism to visit the Judd and Chinati Foundations in Marfa, Texas, the prompt created was to provide five residences for short period of stay. The designer could choose to build the dwellings in town or on the outskirts of Marfa in the landscape. Looking to build upon the experience at Donald Judd’s studio, the form emerged to create a curated pathway between small and larger courtyards. Not only studying the size of the courtyard, but understanding a variety would allow for different lighting conditions.
Studies of precedents and the proportion of courtyards as well as explorations of specific experiences, led to the final design. A cafe and public courtyard became a large portion of the project due to the urge for more public gathering space in Marfa.
